In 2007, a group of lecturers in the Department of International Relations, Universitas Gadjah Mada attempted to create a platform that would facilitate their diverse research interests. An emerging theme at that time, globalization, became an umbrella issue which brought these researchers to collaborate collectively. As a result, Laboratory of Globalization Study was established.
The success of the initial project was seen as an opportunity to extend the area of study and research to not only focus on globalization but also encompass a wide array of issues taught in the International Relations department. Hence, in 2010, Laboratory of Globalization was revamped into the Institute of International Studies (IIS) with three main research clusters, as follows:
- Global Politics and Security
- International Political Economy and Development
- Peace and Conflict Studies
As a department-attached research institution, IIS aims to develop a theoretical understanding of international issues and to incorporate them in the practical level for the actualization of peace and justice. IIS is home to lecturers, students, academic staffs and researchers of Department of International Relations who are committed to deepen and employ their expertise in research, policy advocacy, academic writing, and publication, as well as community service activities.
As of 2018, we began to specialize our research pivot into Global South perspective, in line with our research concerns for the past years. This perspective reconfiguration made us the first leading international affairs research institution in Indonesia with the expertise regarding the experience and outlook of the Global South.
